Understanding how breath affects your body
Your breathing pattern influences almost everything in your body. It affects your posture, rib and spine movement, muscle activation, circulation, energy levels and emotional state. When the breathing pattern becomes restricted or shallow, tension often builds in the neck, chest and diaphragm. This can contribute to pain, stress, reduced mobility and a constant feeling of fatigue.
You may experience:
- A tight chest or restricted rib movement
- Difficulty taking a full breath
- Neck and shoulder tension caused by overactive accessory muscles
- Feeling constantly “on edge” or overstimulated
- Poor focus, poor sleep or a sense of overwhelm
- Reduced tolerance to physical training or daily stress
These patterns often develop due to:
- Chronic stress that keeps the sympathetic system dominant
- Sedentary posture that compresses the diaphragm
- Previous injuries that changed rib or spine mechanics
- Habitual shallow breathing
- Emotional tension that alters the rhythm of the breath
We look at:
- How your diaphragm moves during inhalation and exhalation
- The relationship between your breath, rib cage, spine and pelvic alignment
- The balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic activity
- Areas of muscular overactivity that restrict natural breathing
- Patterns of tension related to stress, anxiety or fatigue
You will gain a clear understanding of what your breath reveals about your body and what we can do to restore balance.
How breathwork supports your health
Breathwork helps the body return to a calmer, more efficient physiological state. When the breath deepens and becomes more rhythmic, the parasympathetic system activates, reducing stress, improving circulation and allowing muscles and joints to relax. This shift has a direct impact on pain levels, posture and overall wellbeing.
During your sessions, we may use:
- Diaphragmatic breathing techniques to improve mobility of the diaphragm, ribs and core
- Rib expansion exercises to restore natural movement in the thoracic spine
- Breathing sequences that calm the sympathetic system, lowering tension and improving emotional stability
- Mindful breath pacing to guide the body into a parasympathetic state, supporting recovery and deeper relaxation
- Postural corrections integrated with breathing to improve the balance between the chest, abdomen and pelvis
- Techniques that improve coordination between breathing, movement and core stability
Breathwork can:
- Reduce anxiety and physical tension
- Improve sleep quality and emotional regulation
- Support rehabilitation by improving oxygen delivery to tissues
- Enhance athletic performance and endurance
- Improve posture and reduce strain on the spine and neck
- Help the body recover from stress and chronic fatigue
Our approach blends clinical understanding with mindful practice so that breath becomes both a therapeutic tool and a daily habit.

FAQ
Your Questions Answered
Everything you need to know about osteopathy and L’OSTEO.
What is Osteopathy ?
Osteopathy is a way of detecting, treating and preventing health problems by moving, stretching and massaging a person’s muscles and joints. Osteopathy is based on the principle that the wellbeing of an individual depends on their bones, muscles, ligaments and connective tissue functioning smoothly together. (NHS)
What conditions can osteopathy treat?
Osteopathy can help with back and neck pain, joint and muscle injuries, sciatica, headaches, sports injuries, postural issues and general musculoskeletal pain. It focuses on restoring healthy movement so your body can function at its best.
Can people of all ages use osteopathy?
Yes. Osteopathy is suitable for all ages including children, teenagers, adults, athletes and older individuals. Treatment is always adapted to each patient’s needs and health profile.
How long does an osteopathy treatment session last?
Initial consultations usually last 45 to 60 minutes and include assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Follow up sessions are 30 to 60 minutes depending on your condition and treatment plan.
Is osteopathy covered by health insurance or the NHS in the UK?
Many private health insurers cover osteopathy depending on your policy. Osteopathy is not routinely available on the NHS so most patients see us privately. We can provide invoices for insurance reimbursement.
Are there any risks or side effects associated with osteopathy?
Osteopathy is generally safe. Some patients may experience mild soreness, fatigue or temporary discomfort for 24 to 48 hours after treatment. Serious side effects are extremely rare. If you experience any severe side effects, please contact your doctor or seek appropriate medical help.
Can osteopathy be used alongside other medical treatments?
Yes. Osteopathy is fully integrated within the medical system and we work in close partnership with GPs and specialist doctors. We focus on our scope of practice and collaborate with other healthcare professionals whenever needed to ensure you receive the best possible outcome.
How many osteopathy sessions will I need to see results?
This depends on the patient and the diagnosis. Most people notice an improvement between three to five sessions, although some very mild conditions may resolve after just one visit.
