Understanding your posture
Posture is not about standing straight. It is the way your body balances itself throughout the day. Good posture requires mobility, stability and endurance working together. When one of these elements is missing, your body adapts. Over time, these adaptations can create tension, pain or restricted movement.
You may experience:
- A rounded upper back or forward head position
- Tightness in the shoulders, chest or neck
- Lower back discomfort when standing or sitting
- Hip or pelvic imbalance during walking or training
- Fatigue in the mid back after long periods at the desk
- Reduced confidence in movement or difficulty maintaining alignment
Postural imbalance can come from:
- Prolonged sitting or working at a desk
- Weakness in stabilising muscles
- Limited mobility in the spine, ribs or hips
- Previous injuries that changed the way you hold yourself
- Poor training form or repetitive daily habits
- Stress or shallow breathing patterns
We look at:
- The alignment of your head, rib cage, pelvis and lower limbs
- How your joints move during sitting, standing and walking
- Areas that are stiff, weak or compensating
- Your breathing mechanics and diaphragm function
- Muscle imbalances between the front and back of the body
- How your posture changes during real life tasks, not just static positions
Our goal is to identify the root of your imbalance and explain it clearly so you understand what needs to change.
How osteopathy helps with postural improvement
Osteopathy helps by restoring the mobility and stability your body needs to maintain healthy posture without effort. Postural issues are rarely about simply standing taller. They are usually the result of stiffness in specific joints, weakness in key muscle groups or poor coordination between the upper and lower body. Our treatment focuses on correcting these deeper patterns.
During your session, we may use:
- Mobilisation of the spine, ribs and pelvis to improve alignment and restore fluid movement
- Soft tissue treatment to release tension in overactive areas such as the neck, chest, hip flexors and lower back
- Techniques that activate deep stabilising muscles which support posture throughout the day
- Corrective exercises that retrain your ability to maintain healthy alignment during sitting, standing and walking
- Breathing work to improve rib mobility, reduce stress related tension and support overall posture
- Guidance on ergonomics, desk setup and daily habits that influence the way your body holds itself
The aim is to create a posture that feels natural, efficient and comfortable rather than forced. Your body will begin to move with more freedom and balance, reducing strain and improving long term function.

FAQ
Your Questions Answered
Everything you need to know about osteopathy and L’OSTEO.
What is Osteopathy ?
Osteopathy is a way of detecting, treating and preventing health problems by moving, stretching and massaging a person’s muscles and joints. Osteopathy is based on the principle that the wellbeing of an individual depends on their bones, muscles, ligaments and connective tissue functioning smoothly together. (NHS)
What conditions can osteopathy treat?
Osteopathy can help with back and neck pain, joint and muscle injuries, sciatica, headaches, sports injuries, postural issues and general musculoskeletal pain. It focuses on restoring healthy movement so your body can function at its best.
Can people of all ages use osteopathy?
Yes. Osteopathy is suitable for all ages including children, teenagers, adults, athletes and older individuals. Treatment is always adapted to each patient’s needs and health profile.
How long does an osteopathy treatment session last?
Initial consultations usually last 45 to 60 minutes and include assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Follow up sessions are 30 to 60 minutes depending on your condition and treatment plan.
Is osteopathy covered by health insurance or the NHS in the UK?
Many private health insurers cover osteopathy depending on your policy. Osteopathy is not routinely available on the NHS so most patients see us privately. We can provide invoices for insurance reimbursement.
Are there any risks or side effects associated with osteopathy?
Osteopathy is generally safe. Some patients may experience mild soreness, fatigue or temporary discomfort for 24 to 48 hours after treatment. Serious side effects are extremely rare. If you experience any severe side effects, please contact your doctor or seek appropriate medical help.
Can osteopathy be used alongside other medical treatments?
Yes. Osteopathy is fully integrated within the medical system and we work in close partnership with GPs and specialist doctors. We focus on our scope of practice and collaborate with other healthcare professionals whenever needed to ensure you receive the best possible outcome.
How many osteopathy sessions will I need to see results?
This depends on the patient and the diagnosis. Most people notice an improvement between three to five sessions, although some very mild conditions may resolve after just one visit.
