Understanding your sports injury
Most sports injuries happen because the body was not fully prepared for the load placed on it. Either the movement was too fast, too heavy or too repetitive for the tissues to cope. This leads to irritation, inflammation and protective changes in how you move.
Common sports related issues include:
- Muscle strains
- Tendon irritation
- Shoulder, knee and hip overload
- Reduced mobility following training or competition
- Compensations that affect performance
These problems develop when:
- A specific muscle group is doing more work than it should
- A joint is stiff or restricted which forces another area to overload
- Training volume increases too quickly
- Technique changes under fatigue
- Old injuries disrupt normal biomechanics
- Recovery is insufficient between sessions
We look at:
- The exact movement that triggered your symptoms
- Joint mobility throughout the kinetic chain, not only the painful area
- Your strength, coordination and stability during functional tasks
- Compensation patterns created by fatigue or old injuries
- How your body absorbs force during running, lifting or sports specific actions
- The difference between how you move on your left and right side
The goal is to identify the root cause of your injury and give you a clear path to recovery and improved performance.
How osteopathy helps with sports injuries
Osteopathy is highly effective for sports injuries because it focuses on restoring optimal movement, reducing tissue irritation and rebalancing the forces that travel through your joints and muscles during training.
During your sessions, we may use:
- Targeted joint mobilisation to restore the range of motion required for powerful and efficient movement
- Soft tissue treatment to reduce tension in overloaded muscles and improve blood flow for faster healing
- Techniques to support tendon recovery, including improving the way a tendon loads and reducing the stress placed on it during everyday movement
- Rehabilitation exercises that rebuild strength in the exact ranges and positions required by your sport
- Neuromuscular training to improve balance, coordination and reaction time, helping prevent re injury
- Movement analysis to refine your running mechanics, lifting technique or sports specific patterns
- Guidance on training load, including how to safely progress volume, intensity and recovery
The aim is not simply to get you out of pain.
It is to restore confidence in your body, correct the weaknesses that led to the injury and help you return to your sport stronger, safer and more efficient than before.

FAQ
Your Questions Answered
Everything you need to know about osteopathy and L’OSTEO.
What is Osteopathy ?
Osteopathy is a way of detecting, treating and preventing health problems by moving, stretching and massaging a person’s muscles and joints. Osteopathy is based on the principle that the wellbeing of an individual depends on their bones, muscles, ligaments and connective tissue functioning smoothly together. (NHS)
What conditions can osteopathy treat?
Osteopathy can help with back and neck pain, joint and muscle injuries, sciatica, headaches, sports injuries, postural issues and general musculoskeletal pain. It focuses on restoring healthy movement so your body can function at its best.
Can people of all ages use osteopathy?
Yes. Osteopathy is suitable for all ages including children, teenagers, adults, athletes and older individuals. Treatment is always adapted to each patient’s needs and health profile.
How long does an osteopathy treatment session last?
Initial consultations usually last 45 to 60 minutes and include assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Follow up sessions are 30 to 60 minutes depending on your condition and treatment plan.
Is osteopathy covered by health insurance or the NHS in the UK?
Many private health insurers cover osteopathy depending on your policy. Osteopathy is not routinely available on the NHS so most patients see us privately. We can provide invoices for insurance reimbursement.
Are there any risks or side effects associated with osteopathy?
Osteopathy is generally safe. Some patients may experience mild soreness, fatigue or temporary discomfort for 24 to 48 hours after treatment. Serious side effects are extremely rare. If you experience any severe side effects, please contact your doctor or seek appropriate medical help.
Can osteopathy be used alongside other medical treatments?
Yes. Osteopathy is fully integrated within the medical system and we work in close partnership with GPs and specialist doctors. We focus on our scope of practice and collaborate with other healthcare professionals whenever needed to ensure you receive the best possible outcome.
How many osteopathy sessions will I need to see results?
This depends on the patient and the diagnosis. Most people notice an improvement between three to five sessions, although some very mild conditions may resolve after just one visit.
