Understanding your muscle tension
Muscular tightness is often a sign that the body has been compensating for too long. When certain muscles work harder than they should, or when stress increases baseline tension, the tissues become less elastic, circulation reduces and movement becomes restricted. This can lead to discomfort, heaviness, stiffness and fatigue that affect daily activities, training performance and overall wellbeing.
You may experience:
- Persistent tightness in the neck, shoulders, back or legs
- Fatigue during or after training
- Difficulty relaxing or switching off
- Reduced range of motion
- Tension headaches
- Discomfort after long hours sitting or standing
Muscle tension may develop from:
- Stress and poor sleep quality
- Repetitive movements or prolonged postures
- Strength imbalances or lack of recovery
- Old injuries that changed the way you move
- High training loads without adequate tissue support
- Reduced blood flow or poor tissue hydration
We look at:
- The quality, tone and elasticity of your soft tissues
- Patterns of overload between major muscle groups
- Areas where tension is linked to restricted joint movement
- Breathing mechanics and how they influence upper body tension
- Your recovery habits, hydration and training schedule
The aim is clarity. You will understand why the tension is present and how massage can help restore comfort, mobility and general wellbeing.
How massage helps with muscular tension
Massage helps by improving circulation, reducing unnecessary muscular tone and supporting the natural healing processes within soft tissues. Targeted, anatomically informed techniques allow us to reduce local tightness while improving the way your muscles function as part of a larger movement system.
During your session, we may use:
- Deep tissue massage to release long standing tension and improve tissue quality
- Myofascial techniques to improve the mobility of the fascia surrounding muscles and joint
- Trigger point work to calm areas of concentrated tightness or referred discomfort
- Rhythmic and circulatory techniques to increase blood flow and support faster recovery
- Stretch assisted mobilisation to enhance flexibility and ease stiffness
- Relaxation focused methods to help the nervous system reduce its baseline tone
Massage is not simply about pressure. It is about creating the right response within the tissues so your body moves with less resistance, feels lighter and recovers more efficiently.

FAQ
Your Questions Answered
Everything you need to know about osteopathy and L’OSTEO.
What is Osteopathy ?
Osteopathy is a way of detecting, treating and preventing health problems by moving, stretching and massaging a person’s muscles and joints. Osteopathy is based on the principle that the wellbeing of an individual depends on their bones, muscles, ligaments and connective tissue functioning smoothly together. (NHS)
What conditions can osteopathy treat?
Osteopathy can help with back and neck pain, joint and muscle injuries, sciatica, headaches, sports injuries, postural issues and general musculoskeletal pain. It focuses on restoring healthy movement so your body can function at its best.
Can people of all ages use osteopathy?
Yes. Osteopathy is suitable for all ages including children, teenagers, adults, athletes and older individuals. Treatment is always adapted to each patient’s needs and health profile.
How long does an osteopathy treatment session last?
Initial consultations usually last 45 to 60 minutes and include assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Follow up sessions are 30 to 60 minutes depending on your condition and treatment plan.
Is osteopathy covered by health insurance or the NHS in the UK?
Many private health insurers cover osteopathy depending on your policy. Osteopathy is not routinely available on the NHS so most patients see us privately. We can provide invoices for insurance reimbursement.
Are there any risks or side effects associated with osteopathy?
Osteopathy is generally safe. Some patients may experience mild soreness, fatigue or temporary discomfort for 24 to 48 hours after treatment. Serious side effects are extremely rare. If you experience any severe side effects, please contact your doctor or seek appropriate medical help.
Can osteopathy be used alongside other medical treatments?
Yes. Osteopathy is fully integrated within the medical system and we work in close partnership with GPs and specialist doctors. We focus on our scope of practice and collaborate with other healthcare professionals whenever needed to ensure you receive the best possible outcome.
How many osteopathy sessions will I need to see results?
This depends on the patient and the diagnosis. Most people notice an improvement between three to five sessions, although some very mild conditions may resolve after just one visit.
