Understanding your chronic pain
Chronic pain is not simply ongoing discomfort. It is a combination of mechanical, neurological and lifestyle factors that keep your body in a state of protection. Muscles tighten, joints stiffen and the nervous system becomes more reactive when the body feels under constant stress or imbalance.
You may experience:
- Pain lasting more than three months
- Symptoms that shift from one area to another
- Waves of sensitivity or flare ups without a clear cause
- Stiffness or heaviness throughout the day
- Fatigue or difficulty relaxing
- Reduced tolerance to activity or exercise
This often develops due to:
- Previous injuries that never fully recovered
- Long periods of sitting or repetitive strain
- Stress affecting breathing and muscle tension
- Lack of deep stability in key areas such as the spine and hips
- Sleep disturbances that prevent proper recovery
- Overcompensation from old habits or protective patterns
We look at:
- How your entire body moves, not just where the pain is located
- Signs of compensation or asymmetry that keep tissues under pressure
- Breathing patterns that influence tension in the ribs, back and neck
- The role of your nervous system and how sensitised it has become
- Your training load, work habits, recovery and daily posture
- Strength and mobility in key areas that should support the body
Our aim is to give you a clear, grounded explanation of what is perpetuating your pain and a realistic pathway to reduce sensitivity and restore confidence in movement.
How osteopathy helps with chronic pain
Treating chronic pain requires more than releasing tight muscles. It involves calming an overactive nervous system, improving the way your joints and muscles share movement and reintroducing healthy load to the body in a gradual and controlled way.
During your sessions, we may use:
- Gentle joint mobilisation to reduce stiffness in the spine, hips, ribs or other areas that are restricting natural movement and forcing other tissues to overwork
- Soft tissue techniques designed to ease protective muscle tone without overwhelming the nervous system, helping your body feel safer and more relaxed
- Breathing and rib mobility work which supports better oxygenation, reduces tension and improves the connection between the diaphragm, core and spine
- Neuromuscular reconditioning techniques to help the brain and body coordinate movement more efficiently and reduce unnecessary protective responses
- Targeted strength exercises to rebuild stability in areas that lack support, allowing the body to distribute effort more evenly
- Gradual load progression to increase your tolerance to activity so you can return to exercise and daily tasks without triggering flare ups
- Guidance on lifestyle, stress and recovery to support long term improvement and prevent your system from returning to the same protective patterns
Each treatment is adapted to your current level of sensitivity. The objective is to help your body move with confidence, reduce its protective responses and re-establish a healthier balance between strength, stability and mobility.

FAQ
Your Questions Answered
Everything you need to know about osteopathy and L’OSTEO.
What is Osteopathy ?
Osteopathy is a way of detecting, treating and preventing health problems by moving, stretching and massaging a person’s muscles and joints. Osteopathy is based on the principle that the wellbeing of an individual depends on their bones, muscles, ligaments and connective tissue functioning smoothly together. (NHS)
What conditions can osteopathy treat?
Osteopathy can help with back and neck pain, joint and muscle injuries, sciatica, headaches, sports injuries, postural issues and general musculoskeletal pain. It focuses on restoring healthy movement so your body can function at its best.
Can people of all ages use osteopathy?
Yes. Osteopathy is suitable for all ages including children, teenagers, adults, athletes and older individuals. Treatment is always adapted to each patient’s needs and health profile.
How long does an osteopathy treatment session last?
Initial consultations usually last 45 to 60 minutes and include assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Follow up sessions are 30 to 60 minutes depending on your condition and treatment plan.
Is osteopathy covered by health insurance or the NHS in the UK?
Many private health insurers cover osteopathy depending on your policy. Osteopathy is not routinely available on the NHS so most patients see us privately. We can provide invoices for insurance reimbursement.
Are there any risks or side effects associated with osteopathy?
Osteopathy is generally safe. Some patients may experience mild soreness, fatigue or temporary discomfort for 24 to 48 hours after treatment. Serious side effects are extremely rare. If you experience any severe side effects, please contact your doctor or seek appropriate medical help.
Can osteopathy be used alongside other medical treatments?
Yes. Osteopathy is fully integrated within the medical system and we work in close partnership with GPs and specialist doctors. We focus on our scope of practice and collaborate with other healthcare professionals whenever needed to ensure you receive the best possible outcome.
How many osteopathy sessions will I need to see results?
This depends on the patient and the diagnosis. Most people notice an improvement between three to five sessions, although some very mild conditions may resolve after just one visit.
