Understanding your joint pain
Joint pain is rarely caused by the joint alone. It usually develops when movement becomes uneven, restricted or poorly supported.
A joint becomes painful when the tissues around it have been working harder than they should or when your body has been compensating for an old injury, a long period of sitting or repetitive daily habits.
You may feel
- Sharp or dull pain during movement
- Stiffness when waking up or after sitting for long periods
- Clicking or grinding sensations
- Reduced range of motion
- Weakness or instability around the joint
- Discomfort that spreads to nearby areas such as the back, hips, or shoulders
These symptoms often come from:
- Previous injuries that changed the way you move
- Reduced mobility in nearby joints, which increases pressure on the painful one
- Imbalances in strength or stability
- Poor posture during work or repetitive tasks
- Training loads that exceed what your joints can currently tolerate
- Inflammation from overuse or long-standing tension
We look at:
- How the painful joint moves compared to the rest of your body
- The condition of the surrounding muscles and how they support the joint
- Your walking pattern, posture, and day-to-day mechanics
- Old injuries that may still influence your movement
- Your strength, flexibility, and recovery habits
- The relationship between your spine, hips, ribs, and limbs
The goal is to give you a clear and understandable explanation of what is causing your symptoms and how we can restore healthy movement.
How osteopathy help with joint pains
Osteopathy helps by restoring healthy movement inside the joint and reducing the mechanical stress that has been building around it. When a joint becomes painful, the tissues surrounding it often tighten, weaken or compensate in ways that create more irritation. Our goal is to calm the joint, improve the way it glides and ensure that the muscles supporting it begin to share the load correctly again.
During your sessions, we may use:
- Precise joint mobilisation techniques to restore the natural glide of the joint surfaces, reduce compression, and allow smoother movement
- Soft tissue treatment for the muscles and ligaments that protect the joint, helping them release unnecessary tension and recover normal function
- Techniques to improve joint stability, especially in cases of excessive mobility, weakness, or previous injury that causes the joint to overwork
- Corrective exercises to rebalance strength among the supporting muscles, so the joint no longer absorbs forces it should not handle
- Movement retraining to help you walk, stand, lift, and sit without placing repeated stress on the painful joint
- Guidance on load management, including how much activity your joint can tolerate, how to progress safely, and how to prevent flare-ups
Each treatment builds on measurable improvements in movement and support. Our aim is not only to reduce pain but to correct the underlying mechanics so that the joint can move freely and confidently again.

FAQ
Your Questions Answered
Everything you need to know about osteopathy and L’OSTEO.
What is Osteopathy ?
Osteopathy is a way of detecting, treating and preventing health problems by moving, stretching and massaging a person’s muscles and joints. Osteopathy is based on the principle that the wellbeing of an individual depends on their bones, muscles, ligaments and connective tissue functioning smoothly together. (NHS)
What conditions can osteopathy treat?
Osteopathy can help with back and neck pain, joint and muscle injuries, sciatica, headaches, sports injuries, postural issues and general musculoskeletal pain. It focuses on restoring healthy movement so your body can function at its best.
Can people of all ages use osteopathy?
Yes. Osteopathy is suitable for all ages including children, teenagers, adults, athletes and older individuals. Treatment is always adapted to each patient’s needs and health profile.
How long does an osteopathy treatment session last?
Initial consultations usually last 45 to 60 minutes and include assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Follow up sessions are 30 to 60 minutes depending on your condition and treatment plan.
Is osteopathy covered by health insurance or the NHS in the UK?
Many private health insurers cover osteopathy depending on your policy. Osteopathy is not routinely available on the NHS so most patients see us privately. We can provide invoices for insurance reimbursement.
Are there any risks or side effects associated with osteopathy?
Osteopathy is generally safe. Some patients may experience mild soreness, fatigue or temporary discomfort for 24 to 48 hours after treatment. Serious side effects are extremely rare. If you experience any severe side effects, please contact your doctor or seek appropriate medical help.
Can osteopathy be used alongside other medical treatments?
Yes. Osteopathy is fully integrated within the medical system and we work in close partnership with GPs and specialist doctors. We focus on our scope of practice and collaborate with other healthcare professionals whenever needed to ensure you receive the best possible outcome.
How many osteopathy sessions will I need to see results?
This depends on the patient and the diagnosis. Most people notice an improvement between three to five sessions, although some very mild conditions may resolve after just one visit.
